OPPO

BBK, one of the larger electronic manufacturers in China, decided in 2000 to expand to new markets. The world would be able to enjoy the audiovisual products of BBK. Their motto: "we offer low and middle income groups the possibility of enjoying high quality products for a low price". The brand BBK was not suitable for International use. It posed both linguistic and legal problems in several countries. Zigila (at the time operating under The NameWorks) was asked to develop a name for world wide use. The name should be distinctive from the most important competitors of BBK: Sony, Hitachi and Siemens.

The name OPPO, a palindrome, stands for equality, balance, harmony and accessibillity. The creative process was concluded in three weeks. The name passed a linguistic check in over 75 language area's and has been legally researched and registered as a world wide trade mark. Following the successful International introduction, BBK decided to launch the name on the Chinese home market as well, in this case for a popular MP3 player concept.
